MEET OUR BOARD
Emily Silby (Chair)
My husband, two girls and I had planned our move to Katikati when Covid-19 lockdown happened. Once the levels lifted, we made the journey here from Te Kuiti. We had spent 7 years enjoying the country life but I missed the ocean. We loved being part of the community there and we arrived fully intending to do the same here. We were enticed to this special part of New Zealand by very good friends of ours and we are so grateful to be surrounded by support.
My children have been in daycare and schooling locally, as well as after school care and holiday programmes – services we could not do without. I commute to Tauranga to practice law full time so we appreciate the inclusive community Katikati provides for our children.
I have experience in leadership, communication, sales, negotiation and general practice law and am looking forward to being able to give back to the Katikati community through this role.
Zinta Krumins (Treasurer)
Over the last year, I have enjoyed working with the team at The Community Centre to document their strategic plan and create a business plan covering the period 2021 and 2022 and work on updating the policies and procedures of the Centre. I have been heavily involved in the preparation for the move to a charitable Trust. I feel honoured to be the Chair of the Board and look forward to working with the newly elected Board in the coming months.
It is a pleasure to use my business experience to support the Centre. I worked in the pharmaceutical industry for over 30 years, and for the last 20 years of my pharmaceutical career I held several senior positions in a number of countries. I developed strong analytical and strategic thinking competencies throughout my career as I started in market research before moving on to business leadership. I also had the privilege to serve on committees of several industry groups.
Since leaving full time employment in 2015, I have worked in voluntary positions, spent time on my hobbies and carried out some consultancy. I became a trustee of COATS (Crowthorne Old Age to Teen Society) a charity which provides a day centre for senior citizens in and around the village of Crowthorne, Berkshire, UK. I also served on the Independent Monitoring Panel of The Chartered Banker Professional Standards Board. I am married to a New Zealander and we live in Bethlehem, Tauranga. Moving to New Zealand in 2019 has allowed me to enjoy spending time on my hobbies of pottery, art and reading and of course supporting the Community Centre.
Lucia Vallely
Moving from Seattle, Washington USA in late 2005, we chose Katikati as our home. It was a momentous decision for my Kiwi husband, two children and me and one thatwe have not regretted. Establishing roots in this community is important to me and to facilitate this, I have worked to support numerous educational, sport and community-sponsored organizations and events over the years.
My current role as Offshore Lecturer for Wintec-Guizhou Tech Interior Design program is a continuation of my 30-year Interior Design career which allows me to share my knowledge and design project experience with Wintec International students in China.
Prior to my teaching role, I worked for nearly nine years in Professional Relations and Marketing/Dental Training for a local dental manufacturer to successfully promote our homegrown brand to a global market.
In addition, I have taught computer technology courses for adult learners for Toi Ohomai and continue to teach courses for Katikati Community Centre to further support lifelong learners with basic computing and internet engagement skills.
Mike Williams (Advisor)
I was born and raised on a sheep and beef farm in the Waikato and attended Te Miro Primary and St Paul’s Collegiate Hamilton. I have a Diploma of Agriculture from Lincoln and a Diploma of Business Management from Massey. I worked in PNG for two years as an Agricultural Officer and travelled extensively for two years.
I then worked in Western Samoa for three years as Director of Farms for University South Pacific.
I’ve owned businesses including a Travel Agency, Real Estate sales and rental management and a Tamarillo orchard.
I’ve spent 12 years as a WBOPDC Councillor including three as deputy Mayor. I’ve held a number of volunteer positions including; Federated Farmers, Katikati Hall Committee, Dave Hume Pool, St John Ambulance, Primary School gala committee, Katikati Sea Scouts, Katikati Taiao, and Western Bay Museum. I’m experienced in; Governance, Financial and general management, Problem solving, Negotiation and the art of compromise.
Board Selection & Duties
Katikati Community Centre is a non-profit community organization established in 1991, and operating in the community for 30 years, since 1993.
The governance of the Centre has been entrusted to an Executive Board whose members are asked to commit to serve a 2-year term. A second 2-year term, confirmed at the AGM, or an SGM, is possible, after which Board members must retire for a minimum of 24 months, before being eligible for reelection. The Board consists of 4-7 members.
Diversity within the Board is actively sought and encouraged, emphasizing diversity of ethnicity, age, culture, gender, relevant skills, and ability to represent a segment of the wider Katikati community.
Duties of the Board
The purpose of the Executive Board is to oversee the management of the business of the Community Centre, employ the Centre Manager, and to provide leadership within the organization and wider Katikati community. The board as a whole is responsible for the following roles that are essential to the success of the Community Centre.
1. Determining the Centre’s Mission, Vision, Objectives (Purpose), and Operating Norms
2. Ensuring effective organisational planning
3. Ensuring adequate resourcing.
4. Ensuring resources are managed effectively.
5. Approving and monitoring, the Centre’s programs to best reflect community needs.
6. Promoting the Centre’s public standing and reputation.
7. Ensuring legal and ethical integrity while maintaining accountability.
8. Recruiting and orienting new Board members with required complementary skill sets.
While the implementation of the day to day running of the Centre is delegated to the Centre Manager and staff, the Board retains responsibility for the governance oversight of the organization.
Board Meetings
The Board generally meets on a bi-monthly basis for up to 2 hours.
Additional meetings are held as required should circumstances require Board input – eg appointment of a new Centre Manager, setting Annual Budget targets etc. Some Board members may serve on subcommittees of the Board – eg Finance, HR etc which will require more ad hoc meetings organised to suit the availability of the members.
Board Selection
The Board frequently seeks to recruit new Board members to expand its skill base and/or community diversity.
Board members need to be passionate about serving the community, particularly in the areas of children & youth, adult education, social support, and information services.
They need to be prepared to commit a minimum of 2 hours of service per month to be familiar with the Centre’s activities and governance issues, and to attend the organised Board & subcommittee meetings.
People with a strong personal commitment to the community with knowledge and experience in community led development, advocacy, and governance are encouraged to apply.
Applications will be reviewed by the Board and candidates offering key needed skills and community diversity will be invited to fill any current vacancies. Applicants may be unsuccessful, not due to their lack of suitability for the Board, but purely because they do not contribute greater diversity or the specific needed skills at that time.
